Groundwork [edit]

I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You is Aretha's first album with Atlantic Records. This championship track was recorded at FAME Studios in Musculus Shoals, Alabama.[6] [7] After Franklin'southward hubby Ted White started an altercation, producer Jerry Wexler decided to go along recording the LP in New York.[viii]

The record spent several weeks at #two on the principal Billboard anthology chart and fourteen weeks at #1 in the magazine's Tiptop R&B Albums chart. Information technology was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1967, eventually selling near two million. It was voted number 352 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Summit 1000 Albums (2000).[9] It received a number 83 ranking on Rolling Rock magazine'southward 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, 84 in a 2012 revised list[10] and 13 in the 2020 edition.[xi] The anthology was also included in both the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Earlier You Dice (2005) and i,000 Recordings to Hear Before Yous Die (2008).[12] When Rolling Stone listed the "Women in Rock: 50 Essential Albums" in 2002 and again 2012, the album listed at number 1.[13] The album included two top-10 singles: "Respect" was a number-1 single on Billboard 's Hot 100 Pop singles chart, and "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Dearest You)" peaked at number 9. The album was rated the 10th best album of the 1960s by Pitchfork.[14]

Reception [edit]

In 1967, Rolling Stone chided the album for "the lack of versatility on the part of the sidemen. The drums weren't hard enough, the guitar was weak, and the product lacked polish."[15] In 2002, though, they placed the album at No. 1 on their "Women in Rock: fifty Essential Albums" listing. In 2003, the album was ranked No. 83 on Rolling Stone 'south list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Music Critic Robert Christgau, gave the album an A, stating "Non all of the tracks sound inspired" but also stating that information technology was the all-time album she had fabricated by that point.[xvi] Q included the anthology in their list of the "100 Greatest Albums E'er".[17] Q also gave the anthology four stars and said "[the album] came out in May 1967 and was number ii in America within weeks ... now information technology stands untainted by time. She seemed and then much a force of nature information technology'due south strange to recall that this was actually her 10th album ..."[xviii]

In the obituary for Aretha Franklin, Rolling Stone fabricated this comment about I Never Loved a Human the Way I Honey You: "Information technology puts the emphasis non just on the smashing songs, or the astonishing music, but on the person speaking them, her globe, her story and whatever journey she's on in life. It rings out like revealed truth happening in existent time, a declaration of independence".[xix]
